Comparative Psychology Field of Study Information

Comparative psychology deals with the mental development and behaviors of animals other than humans. Major themes of comparative psychology include primate behavior, adaptation and evolution, mating, parenting, heredity and learning. Emphasis is frequently placed on the similarities between species.

Comparative psychology is often introduced at the undergraduate level as part of a comprehensive bachelor's program in psychology. Psychology students can choose to focus on comparative psychology at the master's and doctorate levels. Specialized programs in comparative psychology may include courses in developmental psychology, research methodology, statistics and biopsychology.

Graduates of comparative psychology programs often find work either in academia as instructors or researchers, or in the private sector, particularly the pharmaceutical industry. Those who choose to work in the pharmaceutical industry most often work in research and development.
